SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT: Spring Creek MX Park

Spring Creek MX Park Sponsor Spotlight

What is Spring Creek MX Park? A Motocross Track located on Highway 60, 9 Miles east of Zumbro Falls MN. It is owned by John and Greta Martin and has been built up into one of the top MX tracks in the United States. It is one of twelve facilities to host a Professional Motocross series.

What kind of events will SCMX host in 2022? SCP will host 10 amateur motocross races that are all  D23 points paying races, along with one Hare Scrambles and one Sprint Enduro, both D23 points events. July 16th is the date for the Professional MX race and there will be an amateur race the day before and the day after the pro race. This National event starts on Wednesday and ends Sunday afternoon. We likely see over 1500 entries for the weekend plus up to 25000 spectators. It is the biggest event held in Southeast MN.

Why should people visit SCMX? It is located in a picturesque valley with Spring Creek running alongside part of the track. The race attendees and staff are super friendly and accommodating. It is a family friendly atmosphere with special activities for smaller children and our younger racers alike. A visitor can watch all levels of motocross racers ranging in age from 4 to over 70 years of age, and skill levels from Beginner to top level and a few pro level racers. There are miles of trials on the property for those that love to hike or go for a mountain bike ride.

Who are the people behind SCMX? It takes many people to run high quality events like those at Spring Creek Park. Owners John and Greta Martin are the two driving factors behind SCMX. John has the primary responsibility of building, maintaining, prepping the track, and overseeing the track crew on practice and race days. Greta's primary responsibilities lie in the behind the scenes organizational tasks that go into putting a long season of events together. This includes all the office work, bookkeeping, sponsorship contracts, overseeing the concession stand operations and the front gate. Danny Luloff and Roger Schellhammer, both ex racers help with track maintenance by running the heavy equipment before and during the events. John oversees the track crew which consists of many volunteers, Matt Schellhammer, Ryan Smith, Mike Janovski, Brent Bjugan, Adam Guberud, Joel Lenz, Joe Kidd, gate dropper big Tom Kidd, and Tim Walker among a few others. Mike Quinn Sr now spends most of each week helping John with a myriad of jobs, and has served as race Referee for over 25 years. Mike Quinn Jr and Jennifer Martin run the scoring and sign up at all the events with the help of Missy Janovski, Scoring is done by LIsa Boaz, Kristine Rumpca, and Carey Quinn are the primary ladies behind recording the numbers as the racers cross the scoring line. Nancy Kidd and Cindy Rumpca are the primary gatekeepers at the entrance to the park. Denise Lindahl, Scott and Joyce Cripps. Esequia Kidd makes sure our young racers on Track 2 have a quality race program.  The three most consistent workers at the track are the retired trio of Old Guys John Martin, Roger Schellhammer, and Mike Quinn Sr. who can be found working on improving the facility almost every day of the week. All are past racers and pioneers in the sport of off road motorcycle racing.

Why is SCMX passionate about supporting motorcycling in Minnesota? Both John and Greta are passionate about riding, John himself is national class racer having won the 1985 National Hare Scrambles Championship. John and Greta have 2 sons Alex and Jeremy are both Pro Motocross racers that have had success in the pro ranks with younger son Jeremy a 2 time outdoor National Champion in the 250cc class. John grew up in a riding family, his love of off road racing coming from his father. John raced both the National Enduro Series and National Hare Scrambles Series for many years. He was a factory racer for Can Am and ATK. Greta has been with him since his early days as a factory racer. Racing is in their blood. They both inspire those around them to be better and to improve the sport for all of the racers coming to SCP.

What is SCMX looking forward to in 2022? Beyond? 2022 goals include continued improvement of the facility both in terms of the track and also the supporting structures. Another facet on the improvement plan is increasing sponsorship for the facility and also for the D 23 series. In a tight market this is a time consuming goal. Increasing the quality and awards for the Spring Creek Super Series is in the works. Rewarding consistent racing  customers is another goal we are working on. It is important to ensure that our customers know how much we appreciate them.

What are the long-term goals of SCMX? Long Term goals include supporting D23 and increasing district membership, as the stronger the district the better it is for all the race promoters and clubs. Another goal is establishing a land buffer around the facility to ensure a solid future for mx racing in our area and state. As we as owners get older we are looking to the future as we want the legacy of SCP MX Park to continue for many decades to come. SCP has a rich history that dates back to Hillclimb events in the 1960's. Motocross at the facility started in 1971, we want to keep it going into the distant future.

Written By: Jackie Riess

Motocross racer Jason Valento got his start with a KDX80. The catch? He purchased it without his parents’ permission. Luckily, they weren’t too upset, as he continued to ride and joined D23 ARMCA in 1998. He began racing motocross, and now competes in the 35+ B and 40+ B classes. Though he has enjoyed racing over the years and has had success on the track, his greatest accomplishment is passing on his love for the sport to his son, Seth. The high quality racing and events in D23 ARMCA are what keep him coming back, and he plans to as long as his body allows. In the future, Jason strives to continue having fun on the track, cheer on young D23 ARMCA racers, and even try other disciplines of motorcycle racing.

In his early racing days, Jason was inspired by Jeff Stanton, and our local motocross hero, Donny Schmit. However, now, he’s inspired by the younger racers that share high-fives before and after their time on the track. Motorcycling has become a part of Jason’s identity, and the friendships and memories he’s made through the sport outweigh the strain on his pocketbook.

Jason starts his race day with a hearty breakfast and quiet time, but he also enjoys a few laughs on the line before the gate drops. In addition to riding and racing, Jason enjoys playing guitar, mountain biking, and snowboarding in the wintertime. He also spends time fending off the paparazzi for his dog, Toby, who he claims is “the famous one” of the pair. Once encouraged to “enjoy the moment,” Jason encourages other D23 ARMCA members to be grateful for the community we have here in D23 ARMCA. He explains, “we have a district with wonderful volunteers who work hard to give us something we should be proud of. We have promoters who are amazing. Say thank you. Be grateful. Help out if you can. Don't take it for granted.”

Alger Grade Single Track Grand Opening June 24th-26th

Grand Opening of the new Alger Grade single track on Minnesota’s North Shore.

Who: Wild Country ATV Club.

What: The grand opening of the new 14 mile single-track trail built in Lake County MN.  Weather permitting, the new trail is expected to be open in June 2022.  The trail is technical with hills, off cambers, drops, step ups and even a short hard-enduro section.  There are easier/harder splits (we call them blue and black sections) so it is accessible to all.  This is a MN Grant-in-aid trail so OHM stickers are required.

Where: North from Two Harbors on Lake Co. Hwy 2 for 8+ miles to E. Alger Grade.  Turn right.  Park in the CJ Ramstad Parking lot.  Limited Primitive camping is available in the CJ Ramstad parking lot if required.

When: June 24th – 26th, 2022.  Friday will be a meet and greet for everyone that had a hand in building the trail system, but the trails will be open for riding.  On Saturday there will be a pancake breakfast followed by a group ride at 10 am if riders new to the Alger Grade OHM trail would like to get familiar with the trail system with someone familiar with it.  Around 1 pm we will be grilling up some food for lunch.  Sunday will be open riding.

Cost: Free!

There may be additional plans as the Grand Opening nears.  If you would like more information just search for the private Facebook group “Alger Grade Single Track Builders Group” and request membership.  There is a trail map on the FB group (Avenza app store as well). There will be an event page that will have the most up to date information.  There may even be someone that is already in the group that you know!  You can also reach out to jleusman@hotmail.com with any questions.

If you would like to see the trail before you ride it, searching “Alger Grade” on YouTube will bring up many videos from Bjork Offroad and others during various stages of the building process.

We hope to see you there!

Namura Technologies Member of the Week: Danny Robin

Member of the Week: Danny Robin

Written By: Jackie Riess

It’s the summer of 2004, and Danny Robin is 14 years old. His parents initially bought a Honda 50 that he and his younger siblings shared, but that only lasted a short period of time until they all received their own bikes. Danny ended up with a Honda CR80 Supermini, and began riding and racing seriously that summer. His first race was at Echo Valley in Brookston, MN, where he finished nearly last and was lapped by the leaders. But his results didn’t discourage him, as he came off the track smiling and ready to compete again. Though Danny was mainly a motocross racer for much of his racing career, he has now shifted focus towards the D23 ARMCA Enduro and Hare Scramble series. Competing in AA, he felt 2021 was a successful season, and is excited to build off this success in 2022.

One race day, Danny starts off with his favorite breakfast: ginger green tea and steel cut oats with fruit, peanut butter, cinnamon, and sweet potatoes. As he prepares for the day, he turns on metal or punk rock, and envisions himself racing the course in preparation. In addition to riding and racing, Danny enjoys mountain biking, running, cross-country skiing, and outdoor exercise in general. Over the winter, he developed a passion for skiing, and may take up ski racing in the future.

Danny is inspired by his younger brother, Jerry. He admires his persistence and dedication to competing in professional motocross and Supercross. Though he’s seen his brother go through highs and lows, and has himself experienced tribulations in racing, he knows they both have to keep going, no matter the level of racing. These experiences are what keep Danny coming back, and have given him a positive outlet and outlook in life.

Danny advises other D23 ARMCA members to focus on controlling their own efforts, actions, and energy. He explains, “if you give it your all physically and mentally at a race, or anything in life for that matter, and look back and say that was a full effort, that’s success.”
